Valentine, Nebraska – The Sandhills Cattle Association started our 82nd Annual Convention & Trade Show on Monday, September 20th, with the 24th Annual Golf Classic here in Valentine, NE, at Frederick Peak Golf Club. Thankfully, we had a great turnout even though the morning started rainy and chilly. We had a total of forty-three participants that teed up this year. The day began at 10:00 AM with a shotgun start, and the teams competed all day for the best of twenty holes. Our first-place team was the team Williams and Martin, and they received a $400 check! Second place was awarded to West Plains Bank, and they were awarded rocking lawn chairs with the Sandhills Cattle Association Golf Classic logo on them. Finally, third place was awarded to Mitchell Equipment, and they received embroidered golf coolers. This year we offered two different Hole-In-One prizes thanks to the Arganbright Law Office of Valentine. On Hole #5, there was a chance to win a $10,000 cash prize, and on Holes #3 or #8, there was an opportunity to win either Steak for a Year, a $500 Gift Card, or new Callaway Irons. Unfortunately, no one hit the elusive hole-in-one. Hopefully, next year we will have a big winner!
We also awarded a Yeti Cup for each hole winner. The winners of each hole are as follows: Hole 1 – Longest Drive: Jennifer Martin, Hole 2 – Closest 2nd Shot: Rick Marlatt, Hole 3 – Closest to the Pin: Kelly Myers, Hole 4 – Longest Putt: Rick Marlatt, Hole 5 – Closest to the Pin: Rob Parkhurst, Hole 6 – Closest 3rd Shot: Brett Fernan, Hole 7 – Shortest Tee Shot Used: Chris Higgins, Hole 8 – Closest to the Pin on Tee Shot: Shane Kime, Hole 9 – Longest Put: Josh Kruger, Hole 10 – Longest Drive: Katie O’Keif. Congratulations to all of the winners. We hope everyone had a fantastic time and will join us again next year!

While the golfers were putting away, we had several teams at the Cherry County Fairgrounds cooking up a storm all day. This extra event was our very first BBQ Cookoff, and the contestants’ meat smoking ability did not disappoint one bit. We had three teams enter this competition: Team 1 was Kevin Curtis and Carm Cheatum, Team 2 was Jason Hoebelheinrich of Hoebe’s Smok’n Meats, and Team 3 was Dave and Brenda Masek of the Nebraska Cattleman’s Association. Thanks to Jim Pinney of Husker Meats LLC, each team was given three cuts of meats to smoke. The three different cuts were Tri-Tip, Brisket, and a Chuck Rib. The teams were allowed to use whatever seasonings and sauces they preferred but were mainly judged on the tenderness, flavor, and appearance. The Sandhills Cattle Association also asked each team to provide one of their signature side dishes for the “People’s Choice Award.” We selected Sandhills Cattle Association President Ryan Adamson and Board Member Valerie Matulka to be our designated judges, and we also had the people turn in their feedback. The winners of each category are as follows: Tri-Tip – Team #3 Dave and Brenda Masek, Brisket – Team #2 Jason Hoebelheinrich, Chuck Rib – Team #2 Jason Hoebelheinrich, Overall – Team #2 Jason Hoebeheinrich, and also People’s Side Dish Choice – Team #2 Jason Hoebelheinrich with his amazing BBQ Nacho Mac n’ Cheese. Jason, with Hoebe’s Smokn’ Meats, won a custom-made BBQ Cookoff Belt Buckle from Molly’s Custom Silver and a bacon grate for his grill. Dave and Brenda Masek received some stainless steel grilling utensils for their first-place win with the Tri-Tip. While these fantastic barbecuers’ were grilling away, attendants inside enjoyed a wine tasting thanks to Niobrara Valley Vineyards of Nenzel. After the judges’ results were in, we served supper to the public and a pleasant evening socializing with music from MillarTime Productions in the background. Thank you to everyone who participated in our first Sandhills Cattle Association BBQ Cookoff and to those that came and joined us for the evening!
