November 11, 2022 - Chewing the Cud

It was the night before EP&C drop off, and all through the office, not a creature was stirring. Not even a mouse. The tags were hung in the calves’ ears with care in hopes the truck would soon be there. The board members were nestled all snug in their beds while visions of the carcass contest danced in their heads. And Maddie with her laptop, and I with a clipboard, gearing up for a frantic day.

Don’t you worry; EP&C drop-off day did not end up with Santa coming down the chimney, but it was kind of like Christmas, in a way! It was a good day filled with amazing people and great cattle. The calves are setting into Fellers Feedlot well, and Maddie and I will be traveling there within the next few weeks to gather all the weights and information we need to kick off the 2023 EP&C contest.

Another event Maddie and I have up our sleeves is a Coyote calling contest in early 2023. You see, here at the Sandhills Cattle association, we believe in promoting the resources of the Sandhills. And one of those resources is the cattle. Now, if you own cattle, you know the problem that predators can cause. So, we want to incentivize predator control. And what better way to do that than to hold a calling contest. You may be wondering what made us think of such a thing. To be honest, I cannot tell you how many times I have heard a rancher over the past three months express how many coyotes they see on a daily basis. My husband said just the other day; he saw 8. I have seen way too many driving home from work in the middle of the day. Not to mention all the ones I have seen lying on the side of the road. We are excited about this event and hope that our members are too! Entries will be dropping soon. Please spread the word and help us promote our newest contest.

Sale season is beginning to gear up. This month we have the Hoffman Fall Bull sale, Mill Bar Angus dispersion, as well as numerous special sales at the local sale barns. Head over to our website and check out the full calendar. Keep in mind we can help your cattle or your sale. Just give Maddie a call at the office, and she will get you started.

We are excited about the holidays and looking forward to spending time with our families. Keep in mind the office will be closed on November 24th and 25th, but you are welcome to send us an email if needed. Thank you for all your support. We appreciate all of you. We hope everyone enjoys the upcoming holidays and spends time with their loved ones.
